The height of a German Shepherd is always measured at the withers, which is the area at the base of the neck and above the shoulders. This is the tallest point on the dog’s body while standing.

Average height of adult German Shepherds:

    Males: 24″-26″ (60-65 cm)
    Females: 20″-24″ (51-60 cm)

Average weight of adult German Shepherds:

    Males: 66-88 lbs (30-40 kg)
    Females: 50-70 lbs (23-32 kg)

While the vast majority of German Shepherds will fall within these ranges, there are exceptions. Your veterinarian, or better yet an experienced German Shepherd breeder, can tell you if your puppy or adult dog is within the standard height and weight for its age.

The charts below show average weights for German Shepherd puppies as they grow to adulthood. Keep in mind is that dogs grow at different rates, so they might not reach the next weight milestone by the designated month soon or they might reach it sooner.

Female German Shepherds are considered to be fully-grown at 24 months of age, 36 months of age for males.
